Industrial Painting – Painting Specification

COMMI carries out industrial painting on structures, steel fabrications, piping, components and other metal parts in accordance with the coating systems and technical specifications of each project.

Application is carried out in dedicated areas, with equipment selected according to the product, the protective system and the characteristics of the component or structure.

Application of Coating Systems

Coating systems are applied in accordance with the sequence, thicknesses and conditions specified in the Painting Specification, the project technical documentation and the product data sheets.

Depending on the specified system, primers, intermediate coats, topcoats and multi-coat systems may be applied.

From a single primer coat to multi-coat systems, application follows the sequence and overcoating intervals specified in the applicable technical documentation.

Preparation of Coating Materials

Before application, the products specified for the coating system, their documentation and the preparation parameters indicated by the manufacturer are checked.

For multi-component products, proportioning and mixing are carried out according to the ratios specified in the applicable technical documentation.

Application Technologies

COMMI operates Airless and Plural Component (bi-mix) application systems, as well as Air-mix and electrostatic application, for different types of industrial coatings.

The application technology is selected according to the characteristics of the product, the specified system and the project requirements.

Coatings for Different Protection Requirements

Depending on the Painting Specification, COMMI applies systems that may include:

Zinc-rich primers

Organic and inorganic

Epoxy

Polyurethane

Epoxy-acrylic

Polysiloxane

Alkyd

Silicone

Multi-coat and high-build systems

Intumescent coatings

Coating Products and Systems

COMMI uses products from leading international manufacturers of industrial coatings, selected according to the Painting Specification, the characteristics of the component or structure and the project requirements.

Carboline / APSA

Hempel

Jotun

AkzoNobel / International

PPG / Sigma Coatings

Application and Inspection of the Coating System

Inspections accompany the different stages of the coating process and are carried out in accordance with the requirements of the Painting Specification, the technical documentation and the inspection plan applicable to each project.

During application, the specified parameters are checked, from ambient conditions and product preparation to the applied film thickness.

Inspection activities are supported by in-house FROSIO Level III and AMPP Senior Certified Coatings Inspector expertise, in accordance with the requirements applicable to each project.

01

Ambient Conditions

Air and surface temperature, relative humidity and dew point.

ISO 8502-4

02

Mixing Ratios

Verification of component proportions in accordance with the product manufacturer’s requirements.

03

WFT — Wet Film Thickness

Wet film thickness check during application of each coat.

ISO 2808

04

DFT — Dry Film Thickness

Check of the applied coating thickness against the specified requirements.

ISO 19840

Depending on the system applied and the project requirements, further checks may be specified, including Holiday/Pinhole Test, adhesion tests and final visual inspection of the coating.

Coating Is Part of the Protection System

The choice of products, thicknesses and application sequence depends on the anti-corrosion system specified for each project.

Surface preparation, application and inspection are therefore managed as integrated stages of the same protection process.
